ALB · ~1 hrAlbany International is the nearest airport; you'll definitely want a rental car.
You'll want a car. There's no practical public transit to the lake, and the fun is spread along 125 miles of shoreline. Two roads you'll know by heart: the Northway (I-87) and the NY-30 corridor that runs the length of the water.
When to visit
Four distinct seasons, none of them wrong.
Summer
mid-July – early Sept
Peak season — the big reservoir warms up, the water's alive with boats, and it all ends with the Ring of Fire.
Fall
late Sept – mid-Oct
Brilliant Adirondack foliage reflected in calm water — perfect for kayaking and the Northville–Placid Trail.
Winter
Jan – Mar
The lake deep-freezes into ice-fishing shanties and snowmobile trails, and the February Walleye Challenge takes over.
Mud season
April
Thaw and runoff — trails go mushy and services thin out. The lake refills toward its spring peak.

Nathan Littauer, Gloversville (~20 min) and Saratoga Hospital (~35–45 min), both 24/7. Call 911 in an emergency.
Cell coverage
Solid in villages and on main roads, but patchy in rural pockets and over open water — download offline maps first.
The dam
This is a reservoir, not a natural lake — levels drop through late summer. Respect the strong current and warnings near the Sacandaga Dam, and never swim near the structure.
Bugs & bears
Black flies in spring, mosquitoes in summer — repellent is non-negotiable. Campers: store food away from tents, bears are around.
